Circa 1885-1895 Churro Transitional Navajo Blanket 84" x 57" Very Electric

Offered here is a circa 1885-1895 beautiful, finely woven, fantastic Navaho weaving that measures 7
feet long by 4 foot 9 inches wide and is in excellent condition.  It was woven by a master weaver on a
primitive upright loom of all Native hand shorn, hand carded and handspun silky old long staple
Churro sheep wool, both warp & weft.  This is the most electrically colorful Navajo blanket we’d ever
had the pleasure of offering.  Further, the balance and symmetry of the weaving is just superb.  The
weaver created this masterpiece with 3 very elongated concentric and finely serrated diamonds.  They
are elongated on the horizontal axis.  Each layer of the concentric diamonds is very intricately outlined
with tiny shiny black, lemon yellow or lime green hourglass motifs.  On estimate, roughly gives 800 to
1000 of these tiny motifs.  This is simply a gorgeous old transitional blanket.

This vintage Native American textile has a fine weft count averaging 36-38 per inch and a warp count
of 8 per inch.  The selvage cords are 100% original and in excellent condition with one break repaired.
Warp selvages are 2-spiral cords and weft selvages are 2-spiral cords.  The corners are tight, original
and in excellent condition.  All four tassels have been restored to excellent.  No bleed, no wear, no
holes, no odors, no moth-bites, no fade, no stains and no snags.  It is clean and comes from a non-
smoking home.  There are 2 small restorations, one in the orange measuring 1” x 1 ½” and one in the
red measuring ½” x 1”.  Both sides are even in color and shown in photos below.  It lays flat & smooth
and is symmetrical.  The hand carded and hand dyed aniline colors are bright and strong in this piece
of American Indian art and they are:  turkey red, shiny black, lime green, lemon yellow and transitional
orange.  Complete with lazy lines and a spirit line or weaver’s pathway, this nice example of antique
Native Americana is ready to display or just tuck away in your private rug & blanket collection.©
