Circa 1885 Serrated Diamond Serape Blanket with Indigo 79" x 60" Churro

Offered here is a circa 1885 fine weave Navaho weaving that measures 6 feet  7 inches long by 5 foot
wide and is excellent condition.  It was woven by a master weaver on a primitive upright loom of all
Native hand shorn, hand carded and finely handspun silky old long staple Churro sheep wool weft on
a 4-ply white Germantown wool warp.  The design of this beautiful old wearing blanket is finely
serrated concentric triple diamond layout.  The weaver used a fine outlining technique for a number of
the concentric layers.  Lots of Indigo was used throughout the blanket, including Indigo selvage cords
all the way around.  Just an extremely fine woven early transitional blanket with an explosion of great
old colors.

This vintage Native American textile has a fine weft count averaging 38-40 per inch and a warp count
of 8 per inch.  The selvage cords are 100% original with one break restored and in excellent condition.
Warp selvages are 2-spiral cords and weft selvages are 2-spiral cords.  The corners are tight, original
and in excellent condition.  All 4 tassels have been restored to excellent.  No wear, no holes, no
odors, no moth-bites, no fade, no stains and no snags.  It is clean and comes from a non-smoking
home.  There is some light bleed of red into the yellow end stripes and there are some scattered faint
spots but nothing major or obtrusive.  Both sides are shown in photos below.  It lays flat & smooth and
is symmetrical.  Colors are bright and strong in this piece of old American Indian art and they are:
hand carded natural ivory white along with hand dyed vegetal old natural Indigo blue, aniline
transitional red, aniline transitional orange, lemon yellow of either vegetal or aniline dye and a
variegated raspberry red which is also either a prickly pear vegetal or an aniline dye.   Complete with
lazy lines, this nice example of antique Native Americana is ready to display or just tuck away in your
private rug & blanket collection.  ©
