| 1920s-1930s KLAGETOH PICTORIAL Navajo Rug 87x57 Offered here is a circa 1920s-1930s big bold design Navaho pictorial weaving that measures 7 feet 3 inches long by 4 foot 9 inches wide. It is attributed to the Klagetoh area and is in excellent condition. It was woven by an expert weaver on a primitive upright loom of all Native hand shorn, hand carded and handspun Navaho Churro and some Merino sheep wool, both warp & weft. The design centers around a very large elongated central diamond that reaches from one end of the field to the other end. This large diamond has a great deep red center with a long row of connected small diamonds down its center and bold stepped tri-color lattice work outlining. In each corner of the field are small human figure elements which are fairly unusual in big old Klagetoh floor rugs. Surrounding the entire rug is a very nice bold black and white zigzag meandering border. We obtained this vintage Native American textile in Taos, New Mexico. It has a weft count averaging 18 per inch and a warp count of 6 per inch. The selvage cords are 100% original and in excellent condition. Warp selvages are 2-spiral cords and weft selvages are 2-spiral cords. The corners are tight, original and in excellent condition. All four tassels are original and in excellent condition. No bleed, no wear, no holes, no odors, no moth-bites, no fade, no stains and no snags. It has never been cleaned, is fairly clean now and comes from a non-smoking home. Whites and colors would benefit from a bath later on when desired. Both sides are even in color and shown in photos below and it lays flat & smooth. There are 3 small restorations with 2 being in the white that measure 1” x 1 ¼” & 1” x 1” and one in the black that measures 1 ¼” x 3 ½”. Colors are strong in this piece of old American Indian art and they are: natural hand carded and blended light variegated brown, natural ivory white along with hand dyed aniline black and aniline deep red. Complete with lazy lines, this nice example of antique Native Americana is ready to display in your own hacienda on the floor or the wall or just tuck away in your own private rug & blanket collection.
