1920s Nice Old PICTORIAL YEI Navajo Rug 51x31

Offered here is a circa 1920s 2 figure Yeii Navaho weaving that measures 4 feet 3 inches long by 2 foot
7 inches wide and is in excellent condition.  It was woven by an expert weaver on a primitive upright
loom of both Native hand shorn, hand carded and nicely handspun Merino sheep wool, both warp &
weft.  The weaver here placed 2 lady dancers on opposite ends of the ivory white field and separated
them with a crisp little straight line concentric diamond.  Framing the field, the weaver used a bold red
brown and fine line orange stepped meander to each side which extends to each end of the rug.  The
side fields are a nice light brown and there is a natural black and orange ribbon all the way around the
piece.  Double opposing Yeiis are fairly uncommon and collectible weavings.

We obtained this vintage Native American textile in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  It has a tight weft count
averaging 24 per inch and a warp count of 7 per inch.  The selvage cords are all complete and in
excellent condition with 5 breaks repaired.  Warp selvages are 2-spiral cords and weft selvages are 2-
spiral cords.  The corners are tight, original and in excellent condition.  All four tassels have been
restored to excellent.  No holes, no odors, no moth-bites, no fade and no snags.  It is clean and comes
from a non-smoking home.  There is one restoration in the white area that measures ¾” x 2”.  Colors
are bright and strong in this piece of American Indian art and they are:  natural hand carded and
blended medium gray, natural hand carded and blended light brown, natural black, natural ivory white
along with hand dyed aniline turkey red, aniline old gold green, transitional orange and an after-bath
light purplish black.  Both sides are even in color and shown in photos below.  It lays flat & smooth and
is symmetrical.  Complete with lazy lines, this nice example of antique Native Americana is ready to
display in your own hacienda on the floor or wall or just tuck away in your private rug & blanket
collection.
