Circa 1930s Finely Woven Optical Block 79" x 68"

Offered here is a circa 1930s canvas tight old Navaho weaving that measures 6 feet 7 inches long by 5
foot 8 inches wide and is in excellent condition.  It was woven by a master weaver on a primitive
upright loom of all Native hand shorn, hand carded and tightly handspun Churro and Merino Cross
sheep wool, both warp & weft.  This rug is a stunning example of the Navajo optical block or tumbling
block design.  Each cube measures approximately 5 ¼” and are just mesmerizing to look at.  Topping
off this great piece is the lightening zigzag white meandering border on the black border field.  This is
by far the best optical design weaving we have ever offered to date.

This vintage Native American textile has a canvas tight weft count averaging 28 per inch and a warp
count of 8 per inch.  The selvage cords are 100% complete and all original except for 10 inches of
restoration.  Warp selvages are 2-spiral cords and weft selvages are 2-spiral cords.  The corners are
tight and in excellent condition.  Three tassels are original and in excellent condition and one has
been restored to excellent.  No bleed, no wear, no holes, no odors, no moth-bites, no fade, no stains
and no snags.  It is clean and comes from a non-smoking home.  One corner has a small restoration
that measures 2” x 2”.  Both sides are even in color.  It lays flat & smooth and is symmetrical.  Colors
are bright and strong in this piece of American Indian art and they are:  natural hand carded and
blended medium brownish gray, natural black, natural medium to dark brown, natural ivory white along
with hand dyed aniline variegated camel gold.  Complete with lazy lines and a spirit line or weaver’s
pathway, this nice example of near antique Native Americana is ready to display or just tuck away in
your private rug & blanket collection.  ©
